The game opens with the "Ambassador" from the Beanbean Kingdom visiting Princess Peach. The ambassador is offering a gift as a gesture of goodwill. However, things soon go wrong when the "gift" sprays the princess with a noxious gas. The ambassador's true form is revealed! A henchmen uses his bizarre helmet to absorb the fumes, the princess faints and the two escape from the castle.

After the opening cutscene, there is a short section in Mario's house as Toad. Just walk over to the bathroom, which is on the left side of the house. Toad while enter, then quickly run out and run into a dresser. Mario walks out and wakes Toad up, who tells him that Princess Peach is in danger. The Mario Bros. quickly leave for Princess Peach's castle.

At the castle, Bowser challenges the Mario Bros. to a battle. In this tutorial battle, you can only control Mario.

The only point of this battle is to teach you about action commands. After two attacks, Toad will teach you about offensive action commands. After four attacks, Toad will teach you about defensive action commands. It's impossible to lose this battle.

After the battle, Toad tells the Mario Bros. about how Princess Peach's voice was stolen and how her new voice causes explosions. The Mario Bros. and Bowser flee as Princess Peach causes a massive explosion in the castle.

There are no enemies in the plaza area, but there are several items that can be obtained. The first one is a Mushroom in a block on a green ledge near the left edge of the plaza. With good timing, you can make the jump from the ledge to the left of it to the ledge with the block. On the right side of the plaza, there is another block, also containing a Mushroom.

The next three items require interaction with characters. On a light green ledge near the right edge of the plaza, there is a Mushroom out in the open. If you get it, a Toad will ask you if he can have it. If you tell him yes, he'll let you keep the Mushroom and he'll give you a Super Mushroom. In the top-left corner of the plaza, there is a Toad with a blue head who has lost his precious object. You can find it if you run to the southern edge of the platform you're standing on. Return it to him for a 1-Up Mushroom.

Once you've found all the items, go north. The first Save Album of the game is here. Head north again, but Toadsworth will stop you before you leave the area. He gives you a suitcase and 100 coins. Head north to the Koopa Cruiser. There, Bowser calls his baddies, and thinking that Luigi is one of them, pulls him aboard the ship.
